As I write this in early July 2026, much of Colorado is under an active air quality advisory. Fires are burning near Rifle, in Pueblo County, and up around Ouray, and on top of that we’re getting smoke transported in from Utah and Arizona. The Front Range woke up this week to an orange moon and PM2.5 readings in the moderate band, layered on an ozone Action Day. If you’ve been wondering whether your house actually keeps this stuff out, this is the summer to find out, because it’s not going to be the last one like it.

Most advice you’ll read on this topic is technically correct and practically useless: buy a HEPA purifier, upgrade your filter, keep windows closed. Fine. But the details are where homes actually get protected or don’t, and where a lot of that advice is quietly wrong. So this guide is going to get specific about the things that matter and skip the padding.

First, Understand What You’re Fighting

Wildfire smoke is a moving mix of gases and particles. The part that drives the unhealthy AQI numbers, and the part your lungs care about most, is PM2.5, particulate matter 2.5 microns across or smaller. For scale, a human hair is roughly 70 microns wide, so PM2.5 is on the order of 30 times thinner than a hair. That size is the whole problem: these particles slip past the defenses in your nose and throat, lodge deep in the lungs, and the smallest fraction crosses into the bloodstream.

Two consequences follow from that, and they shape everything else:

First, you can’t smell your way to safety. The smoke smell comes largely from gases and VOCs, which a particle filter doesn’t remove. Your house can smell fine and still have elevated PM2.5, and it can smell smoky while the particle count is actually manageable. Trust a monitor, not your nose.

Second, and this is the Colorado-specific wrinkle most national guides miss: on the Front Range, smoke rarely arrives alone. Wildfire particulates and ground-level ozone tend to spike together in hot, stagnant summer weather, and the smoke itself helps cook up more ozone. That’s why our summer advisories so often read Action Day for multiple pollutants. It matters because the two require different responses: a particle filter does nothing for ozone, and the single most effective thing you can do about ozone is drive less on those days, which also happens to reduce the pollution feeding it.

The MERV Question, Answered Honestly

Here’s where the templated posts either hand-wave or get it wrong.

The right target for smoke is a MERV 13 filter. MERV 8, the cheap fiberglass or lightly-pleated filter most systems ship with, is built for dust and lint and lets most PM2.5 sail right through. MERV 11 is a real improvement (some testing shows it delivering roughly half the smoke-cleaning rate of MERV 13), and it’s a legitimate fallback. But MERV 13 is the residential sweet spot: it captures a meaningful share of fine smoke particles, and it’s the level both the EPA and ASHRAE point to for smoke events and higher-risk households.

Now the part that gets skipped. A denser filter fights your blower. Every filter creates resistance, static pressure, and the higher the MERV, the more resistance. Push it too far and airflow drops, the blower strains, your system heats and cools less effectively, and in the worst case you damage equipment. This is the real reason an older HVAC tech might tell you to stay at MERV 8. They’re not wrong about the failure mode; they’re often working from a rule of thumb that predates modern filter and system design.

So the honest answer is: most newer residential systems can run a MERV 13 fine, but not all can. Before you commit, check your owner’s manual, and if you’re unsure, have a tech confirm your blower can handle the static pressure, ideally by actually measuring it, not guessing. If your system genuinely can’t, a MERV 11 changed frequently beats a MERV 13 that chokes your airflow.

Do not put a true HEPA filter in your ductwork. This is a common and expensive mistake. HEPA is roughly equivalent to MERV 17 to 20 and creates far more resistance than any normal home blower is designed to pull air through. It belongs in a standalone purifier, not your return. The right architecture is MERV 13 in the HVAC system doing whole-home work, plus portable HEPA units doing focused work in the rooms you actually live in.

Two Settings That Do More Than Most Gadgets

Before spending a dollar, change two things:

Set your thermostat fan to On, not Auto. On Auto, the blower only runs when the system is actively heating or cooling, which, on a mild smoky evening, might be barely at all. Your MERV 13 filter can’t clean air that isn’t moving through it. Switching the fan to On runs continuous circulation so the filter works around the clock. It costs a bit more in electricity; during a heavy smoke event it’s worth it.

Check the filter weekly during an active event, not monthly. This is the tip that separates people who stay ahead of smoke from people who don’t. A 1-inch filter that normally lasts 60 to 90 days can load up in a week or less when smoke is heavy, and a clogged filter both stops cleaning well and starves your airflow. Hold it up to a light: if you can’t see through the pleats, or it’s gone gray and matted, replace it. Buy the replacements before fire season, because everyone in the state is buying them the same week you are.

The DIY Air Cleaner That Beats a Store-Bought Purifier

This is the single most useful, most under-shared piece of the whole topic, so here are real numbers.

Portable purifiers are rated by CADR, clean air delivery rate, in cubic feet per minute. Higher CADR means more clean air, faster. In a controlled-chamber study of simulated wildfire smoke, researchers measured different do-it-yourself designs:

  • A basic box fan with a single MERV 13 filter taped to the back delivered about 111 CFM of clean air.

  • Building a Corsi-Rosenthal box, four MERV 13 filters arranged in a cube around the fan with a cardboard shroud, raised that by 261 percent, to well over 400 CFM.

  • A four-inch-thick filter alone (versus a one-inch) more than doubled performance; a simple shroud on the fan’s output added another roughly 40 percent.

To put that in perspective, a 400-plus-CFM Corsi-Rosenthal box rivals or beats many purifiers costing several hundred dollars, and you can build one for roughly 60 to 100 dollars in parts you can get at any hardware store: a box fan, four MERV 13 filters, tape, and a piece of cardboard. It looks unglamorous and it works. For a bedroom or a family room during a smoke event, it’s arguably the highest-value move available.

One critical caveat from that same study: a heavily smoke-loaded filter cratered performance. The clean air delivery rate fell sharply once the filters were caked. Whatever you build or buy, the filters are consumable, and during heavy smoke they get used up fast. Plan on replacing them.

If you build a Corsi-Rosenthal box, run the fan on a setting it’s comfortable with and don’t leave a box fan running unattended overnight for long stretches; use a fan in good condition and reasonable judgment.

Sealing the Envelope, Without Overdoing It

You want to slow the rate at which outdoor air leaks in, which mostly means the boring stuff: keep windows and doors closed during smoke, and address the obvious gaps, weatherstripping on doors, and the big one people forget, your bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans and range hood, which pull outdoor air in to replace what they blow out. Running the range hood during a smoke event can actively suck smoke into the house. Use them only as needed.

If your air conditioner or system has a fresh-air intake or an economizer that draws in outside air, close it or switch to recirculate during smoke. Many Colorado homes with evaporative (swamp) coolers face a real bind here: swamp coolers work by pulling large volumes of outside air through the house, which is exactly what you don’t want when that outside air is smoky. On heavy smoke days, running the swamp cooler can make indoor air worse. This is a genuine tradeoff between staying cool and staying clean, and there’s no cost-free answer if that’s your only cooling.

Don’t chase a perfectly sealed house, though. Homes need some air exchange, and combustion appliances need to vent properly. The goal is to reduce infiltration during events, not to seal yourself into an airtight box.

Create One Clean Room

You don’t need to make the whole house pristine; you need one space that stays reliably clean, ideally a bedroom where you spend sleeping hours. Pick a room with few windows, run a HEPA purifier or a Corsi-Rosenthal box sized to the room, keep the door closed, and make sure your central system’s MERV 13 is also feeding it. For households with someone who has asthma, COPD, heart disease, or who is very young, elderly, or pregnant, this clean room is the priority; get it right first, then worry about the rest of the house.

Know What the Air Is Actually Doing

Guessing is the enemy here, and Colorado gives you good, free tools:

  • CDPHE’s Colorado Smoke Blog and air quality advisory pages are the authoritative source for statewide advisories, Action Days, and the forecaster’s read on where smoke is heading over the next 24 to 48 hours.

  • A low-cost PM2.5 monitor (PurpleAir, and the crowd-sourced map it feeds) tells you what’s happening on your actual block and, if you get an indoor unit, inside your house. Watching your indoor number drop after you kick on a purifier is also the most convincing proof that any of this works.

  • A quick field test from the state’s own guidance: if visibility is under about 5 miles in smoke in your neighborhood, the air has reached unhealthy levels. It’s crude, but it works when you can’t check a screen.

What Actually Matters, in Order

If you do nothing else, do these, roughly in priority:

  • Run a MERV 13 filter (if your system handles it) with the fan set to On, and check it weekly during smoke.

  • Build or buy a strong air cleaner for the room you sleep in; a Corsi-Rosenthal box is the best value going.

  • Close up the obvious envelope leaks during events, and don’t run your range hood or swamp cooler into a smoke plume.

  • Watch CDPHE and a local PM2.5 monitor so you’re reacting to reality, not vibes.

  • Remember that on Front Range Action Days you’re often fighting ozone too, which filters won’t touch; that’s the day to drive less and keep strenuous activity indoors.

None of this is exotic, and most of it is cheap. The homes that ride out a Colorado smoke summer comfortably aren’t the ones with the most expensive equipment; they’re the ones that did the basic things early and stayed ahead of the filter changes. Get your filters and build your box before the next advisory, not during it.
